The International Coffee Tasting Asia 2013 has ended in Tokyo. The competition featuring coffee from all over the world took place in the Japanese capital on 25th and 26th November with 75 coffees entered from 8 different countries (Australia, Canada, Italy, Japan, Korea, Switzerland, Taiwan and Thailand).
The competition was organised by the International Institute of Coffee Tasters with the collaboration of the Italian and Japanese branches and the technical support of the Centro Studi Assaggiatori - Italian Tasters. The coffee was judged by two panels of expert tasters from Japan, Korea and Taiwan, all trained according to the Italian sensory analysis methods.
The competition in Asia followed that of the same name, previously organised with great success in Italy in 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2012. The competition was brought to Tokyo for the first time in homage to the first foreign branch of the International Institute of Coffee Tasters; this Japanese branch was founded in 2008 and now alone boasts more than 500 tasters.
‘Organising a coffee competition in Asia means first and foremost operating in one of the parts of the world with a high growth rate for this product’, said Luidi Odello, president of the International Institute of Coffee Tasters, ‘While in Italy the consumption of coffee does not vary significantly, in Asia there are entire countries where this product is relatively new.’
‘As Italians we have developed a coffee tasting method based on the scientific rules of sensory analysis’, continued Odello, ‘For some years we have been exporting this knowledge abroad, particularly to Asia where we already operate in various countries and where in the next few months we will open branches in Korea and Taiwan, thanks to our many local tasters’.
